Her Name Is Nichole Walker.
I am the youngest of three children and the only girl. I was raised by a single mother who worked two jobs in the inner city of Houston, Texas. I was consistently told I was going to college; however, looking at my family’s finances, I questioned who was going to pay for it.
Seeing other female athletes at my school get and receive Division 1 scholarships to play basketball and volleyball led me to the conclusion that a basketball scholarship was how I would pay for my college education.
I had to put in a lot of hard work to turn this dream into reality. This dedication paid off, as I earned a starting position on the Varsity team as a sophomore and received an Honorable Mention. In my junior year, I was named to the Second Team All-District, and in my senior year, I was named to the First Team All-District.
After graduating, I signed my Letter of Intent to play for a junior college. During my sophomore season, I was honored to be selected for the JUCO All-Star Team. At this event, coaches of four-year Universities scout players to offer scholarships for the opportunity to play at the university level. I seized that opportunity and earned my bachelor’s degree for free while playing two more years of the sport I love.
